Second Order of Worship (The Blue Sheet)
(Compiled by Ron Lawson)
Organ Prelude
Songfest (See announcement page for list of hymns)
Leader: Let us read Psalm 130 together responsively:
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full
redemption.
He himself will redeem us from all our sins.
[All stand]
All sing: Hymn 679 "God be in My Head"
All say:
I know that my Redeemer lives,
and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.
And after my skin has been destroyed,
yet in my flesh will I see God;
I myself will see him with my own eyes --
I, and not another. [Job 19:25-27]
Leader: [read the Call to Worship set for the day]
Leader: [pray]
All say:
The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
To release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. [Luke 4:18,19]
Opening Hymn [as listed on announcement page]
Scripture readings [listed on announcement page]
Hymn of Meditation or Special Music: [as listed on announcement page]
Sermon, Discussion, or Worship Recital [see announcement page]
Leader: [Announcements]
All: Stand, form a circle, and then sing Merbecke's "Lord Have
Mercy":
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Leader: Let us all, in silence, confess our sins.
Leader:
"Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord.
"Though your sins be like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.
Though they be red as crimson, they shall be like wool." [Isaiah 1:18]
All say:
Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. [A prayer attributed to St. Francis]
Leader:
This is the assurance we have in approaching God:
that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us -- whatever we ask --
we know that we have what we asked of him. [1 John 5:14, 15]
Leader: Let us share our personal, communal, and social concerns with one another
and with the Lord.
All: [a time of sharing]
Leader: [pray] [express unity in prayer by joining hands while we pray]
All say: [the Lord's Prayer]
Offering & Closing Hymn [see announcement sheet]
All join in the Benediction:
Glory be to him whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine;
Glory be to him from generation to generation
in the Church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. [Ephesians
3:20, 21]
All sing: Vaughan Williams: "God be with you" [Hymn 66, verses 1, 3]
God be with you till we meet again;
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you:
God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again;
When life's perils thick confound you,
Put His arms unfailing round you:
God be with you till we meet again.
All be seated
Postlude (remain seated)
