Guest Speaker: Mario Ochoa (Executive Vice-president of ADRA International). Morning Topic: The Good Samaritan of the 1990's.  Afternoon Topic: Development and Mission.

Church History Series: led by Terry Anderson (a continuation of our series on the history of the early Christian church). Topic: The History of Heaven - how the beliefs concerning the abode of the blest after death has changed over the history of Christianity; the Hebrew and Greek precursors.

Guest Speaker: Dr Robert Prouty (formerly Academic Dean at the Adventist university in Rwanda). The university was the site of a major massacre during the tribal conflict in Rwanda and has been the scene of another massacre recently.  Bob knows Rwanda extremely well. Topics: Noon: Adventists and Genocide in Rwanda: What went Wrong?.  3pm: Old Wine in New Bottles -- Adventist Church Leadership in Central Africa. Note unusual meeting times due to Columbia scheduling. Bring a snack for the short break between meetings.

Book Review & Discussion: Book: The Rise of Christianity: A Sociologist Reconnsiders History by Rodney Stark. Stark is probably the most prominent figure in the sociology of religion these days.  He took colleagues and historians by surprise when he wrote this book, which will give everyone lots of new ideas to mull over--for example, Stark presents evience that women played a major role in the spread of early Christianity. Reviewers: Jan & Terry Anderson, Joe Mesar, Diane Pomeroy, Emmanuel Erin, John Edwards.

Guest Speaker: Dr Steve Timm (a post-doctoral fellow doing physics research at SUNY Albany.  He is also the founder and director of SDAnet on the internet). Topic for the day: When Fundamentalism meets Science. Morning  topic:  Finding Faith in Science and Nature.  Afternoon Topic: Proof-Texting Science
June 27 
Member Speaker: Steve Vance (Doctoral student in physics at Columbia University). Morning Topic: Does God Believe in Evolution: Can Adventism Survive a Nonliteral Interpretation of Creation?.
July & August We do not meet at Columbia University during July and August, but we usually have two or three meetings in member's homes -- watch for announcements here or in the newsletter.  We resume our St Paul's Chapel services on September 12.
